The short answer

DOJO pairs your coffee with three functional mushrooms — Lion's Mane for focus, Cordyceps for energy, Chaga for defence. Each one survived something hard by building a chemical solution, and we've learned to borrow it.

It's not a trend. Humans have been living off fungi for 7,000 years — bread, beer, champagne, blue cheese, Vegemite, penicillin. This is the same story, one step further.

Humans have been living off fungi for thousands of years

Long before anyone understood what yeast or mould actually was, we were already relying on both, every single day. The pattern repeats across almost the entire span of human civilisation.

Around 7,000 years ago

Some of the earliest fermented drinks on record, made in Neolithic China and Georgia, were only possible because of wild yeast — a fungus — converting sugar into alcohol.

Around 5,300 years ago

Ötzi the Iceman was found carrying two different fungi in his kit: one for starting fires, one used as folk medicine — the earliest direct evidence of humans carrying mushrooms themselves as everyday tools.

Around 5,000 years ago

The Sumerians and Egyptians were baking bread and brewing beer, both powered by the same yeast fermentation.

Around 221 BCE

A fermented tea we now call kombucha is traced to Manchuria in northeast China, made with a culture of yeast and bacteria and prized as a health tonic.

The Middle Ages

Blue cheeses like Roquefort were being ripened by Penicillium mould, with production formally recognised and legally protected in France by 1411.

Late 1600s

Dom Pérignon formalised the traditional method of champagne-making, where yeast triggers a second fermentation directly inside the bottle — the same fungus responsible for the bubbles.

The last 100 years

1902 and 1923

Marmite and then Vegemite figured out how to take leftover brewer's yeast — literally a fungus — and turn it into a spread now sitting in millions of kitchen cupboards.

1928

Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin: a defence chemical made by a mould, which went on to become the most important medicine of the century.

1990s onward

Kombucha, invented in China over 2,000 years earlier, finally gets "discovered" by Western consumers and becomes a wellness-aisle staple.

The timing is the part people miss

Within the same 30-year window, humans figured out how to concentrate brewer's yeast into a breakfast spread — and how to concentrate a mould's own defence chemical into a life-saving medicine. Two everyday fungi, doing two completely different jobs, discovered almost side by side.

The next 100 years

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest problems in modern medicine — the bacteria penicillin and its successors were built to fight are quietly evolving around them. So scientists are doing exactly what Fleming did in 1928: going back to nature. Soil, deep-sea fungi and other extreme environments are being combed for the next generation of natural defence chemicals, because more than half the drugs we already rely on trace back to a natural compound, not a lab bench.

Functional mushrooms sit inside that same search — not as antibiotics, but as proof that fungi are still one of the richest, least-explored toolkits nature has to offer.

Three mushrooms, three completely different survival problems, three different chemical solutions. Here's what each one built, and what it does in you.

Lion's Mane

Lion's Mane grows on hardwood trees, and it has to constantly repair its own delicate, branching structure against weather, damage and rot. To do that, it produces two unique compounds — hericenones and erinacines — as its own internal repair kit.

In humans, those same compounds are able to cross the blood–brain barrier and support the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) — a protein the brain uses to maintain and repair its own neurons. It's why Lion's Mane has become the go-to functional mushroom for focus and mental clarity: it's not stimulating you the way caffeine does, it's supporting the brain's own maintenance system.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps

Cordyceps has a very different survival story. Unlike Lion's Mane quietly repairing itself on a tree trunk, Cordyceps has to fight hard for its resources — competing directly with rival microbes for the same food source. To do that, it evolved compounds like cordycepin and a set of unique polysaccharides as an energy weapon.

In humans, those same building blocks support the production of ATP — the energy currency every cell in your body runs on — and support how efficiently your body uses oxygen. That's why Cordyceps is popular with people wanting sustained energy: not a sharp caffeine spike and crash, but a steadier supply of clean cellular fuel.

Chaga

Chaga

Chaga grows on birch trees in freezing sub-Arctic climates, sometimes for up to twenty years, enduring extreme UV exposure and cold with nowhere to shelter. To survive, it builds a dense, near-black crust packed with melanin, polysaccharides and one of nature's most concentrated stores of superoxide dismutase (SOD) — a powerful antioxidant compound.

In humans, that same antioxidant load helps neutralise everyday oxidative stress — the everyday wear and tear on your cells from things like pollution, poor sleep or a demanding schedule. It's the reason Chaga is framed as daily armour rather than a quick hit: it's a slow-build defence, not a stimulant.

Common questions

Will it make me trip, or is it legal?

100% legal, and zero psychoactive effect. Lion's Mane, Cordyceps and Chaga sit firmly in the "everyday wellness" category — a different family entirely from psilocybin ("magic") mushrooms.

Why not just eat raw mushroom?

Raw mushroom cell walls are made of chitin — the same tough fibre found in crab and lobster shells — and the human gut can't break it down efficiently. Most of the benefit would just pass straight through you. Extraction breaks that wall down first, the same way turning milk into cheese concentrates and unlocks nutrients that would otherwise be harder to absorb.

Will I build up a tolerance?

No. These aren't drugs acting on a single receptor that your body adapts around — they're complex, nutrient-dense compounds your body simply absorbs and uses, the way it uses vitamins from food.

Does it taste like mushroom?

Barely, if at all. Coffee is ground, and so is the extract — you're blending a powder into a powder, and coffee is already built to carry earthy, roasted notes. At roughly a gram a cup, if anything it rounds the cup out with a smooth, savoury depth.
